Together, we can make our birds' lives more healthful, comfortable, joyful and longer.
Generally speaking, birds have a long
memory, are intelligent, intuitive, and
usually have their own agenda! They
are "hard-wired" to survive in their
native environment and are some-
times only one generation removed from the wild. They are wild animals living in our homes that have been
acclimated to interaction with humans. Every bit of the inherited knowledge (instinct) is being used in the living room, just as it would in the native rainforest! Most species bond strongly with one mate for life and will fiercely protect that mate as well as the chosen nest territory from real or perceived interlopers. They are prey-animals; not predators like our cats and dogs. Therefore, they react to the environment in a defensive manner, always on the alert for possible flight or fight.
The very things that endear our feathered friends to us are also the things that can come between us. "Why does my bird bite me?" "I thought seed was what birds eat!" "My bird hates everyone but me." "My bird's beak/wings/nails are overgrown." "My bird screams." "My bird is mean when it is in the cage." These are some of the manifestations of the attributes we actually love in birds! It's just that these particular manifestations are not appropriate for the human living room! The attribute will not change, but the way in which the bird expresses it can.
